The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, identify opportunities, maximize efforts, and win.

"Football is a game played with arms, legs and shoulders
but mostly from the neck up."
Knute Rockne

People respond to good leadership! Period! It is in all aspects of our lives, not just business. A parent is a leader in their home; a son or daughter may be a leader of a sports team or writing club. A group relies on the person in charge to actually lead them to success.

Sports Do Not Build Character...They Reveal It””
John Wooden

Of course, you can’t make all people around you happy all the time. But you can learn to connect with people more effectively and affectively.

Being a likeable leader involves building credibility with others. It’s all about breaking through barriers and reaching people with your message.

In our society we have leaders and followers. Are we born to one or the other? Perhaps in part, but you can hone your leadership skills by learning and practicing the top leadership must-haves listed below.

Likeable leaders…

  • Connect effectively with others on an emotional level.

  • Live with integrity and build credibility with others by being genuine and living authentically.

  • Motivate and empower others to work within their strengths, gifts, and talents for the mutual benefit of the individual and the organization.

  • Adapt to and move with change.

  • Live in freedom, not fear. They use collaboration and positive re-enforcement, not fear, to get the job done.

  • Think BIG! They don’t build ceilings, limits or barriers; they open doors and windows.

  • Share their vision with excitement, and generate passion for their plans in others.

  • Strive for excellence and encompass best practices.

  • Focus on results and solutions, rather than the problems and complainers.

  • Tackle the impossible. Complex problems require creative solutions.

  • Model and encourage creativity.

  • Communicate effectively and express their values in all that they do.

  • Set goals. When the goals are met they set new goals.

  • Above all else, likeable leaders are fun!

Likeable doesn’t equal “nice.” Likeable leaders don’t avoid confrontation for their own convenience, and at the cost of others. They are bold and assertive.

Likeable leaders delegate appropriately, not according to seniority, but according to the skills and attitudes needed for each task or project.

In the end, your opponent is not the offense or defense. Your rival is not on the other side of the field. Your adversary is not the other team. It’s you. It’s your determination. It’s how good you can get. It’s how much better you can get.

"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender."
Vince Lombardi

Be excellent in everything you do: football, life, school, and relationships. Increase your people skills and learn how to lead and live more effectively. You can improve your own self- respect and become an inspiration to others. How great is that!

So, keep going. Keep learning. Keep practicing.

“It's not whether you get knocked down,
it's whether you get up.”
Vince Lombardi
